How to Get Your Drivers’ License in the Philippines

So, you’ve decided that you want to get behind the wheel. Great! Read on to learn a step-by-step guide on how to get your driver’s license in the Philippines, whether you’re a student driver or a professional.

Student Permit

A student permit is a prerequisite for getting a driver’s license. Valid for a year, it allows you to drive a vehicle as long as you’re accompanied by a licensed driver. 

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be at least 16 years old
  • Accomplished Application for Permits and Licenses (APL) Form
  • Original and photocopy of LTO-accredited medical certificate
  • Original and photocopy of Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) certificate
  • Original and photocopy of valid government ID
  • For minors: Notarized parental or guardian’s consent with a valid government ID
  • For employed: Taxpayer’s Identification Number (TIN)

How to apply:

  1. Submit the required documents to an LTO representative.
  2. Have your photo taken and affix your signature in the designated area. 
  3. Once the application has been approved, pay at the cashier. 
  4. Receive student permit in the form of an official receipt. 

Non-Professional License

A non-professional license allows you to drive any licensed private vehicle. You may apply for this type of license up to 12 months upon receiving your student permit. 

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be at least 17 years old
  • Accomplished APL Form
  • Original and photocopy of LTO-accredited medical certificate
  • Original and photocopy of Practical Driving Course (PDC) certificate
  • Original valid student permit 
  • For minors: Notarized parental or guardian’s consent with a valid government ID
  • For employed: TIN

How to apply:

  1. Register in the LTO online portal. 
  2. Fill out the necessary fields, and verify your account. 
  3. Pay the online fees.
  4. Submit the requirements to your preferred LTO office.
  5. Complete the written and practical exams. 
  6. Once the application has been approved, have your photo taken and affix your signature.

Professional License

A professional license allows you to drive for a living, authorizing you to get paid for the operation of any public or private vehicle. 

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old
  • No unsettled traffic violations
  • Accomplished APL Form
  • Original and photocopy of LTO-accredited medical certificate
  • Original and photocopy of PDC
  • Original valid student permit or non-professional driver’s license
  • Original and photocopy of birth certificate
  • Valid NBI Clearance or Police Clearance
  • LTO Client ID
  • TIN

How to apply:

  1. Submit the required documents at the LTO office.
  2. Pay fees. 
  3. Complete the written and practical exams.
  4. Once the application has been approved, have your photo taken and affix your signature.
  5. Receive professional driver’s license and official receipt. 
  6. Sign the Release Form.
