selling your car

Selling your car privately is not easy. You have to arrange for advertising, answer a lot of inquiries, negotiate a price, prepare the necessary documents, and secure the payment for your car. That’s a lot of steps you have to do, yet sometimes you can’t still guarantee that buyers will buy it.

Here at Carsada, we understand the pain of going through the whole process of selling your car privately without a guide to refer to. That’s why we compiled all of the important things you should keep in mind before, during, and after selling your car.

Before: Make it look sale-ready

Before you sell your car, you have to make it look sale-ready first. Clean your car and prepare it for a photoshoot. Presentation matters especially if you’re going to sell it online. Forget the old adage to not judge the book by its cover because if you’re selling your car via the internet, people will rely heavily on photos you posted about your car.

Before: Create a contract

Prior to selling your car, you have to make sure that you already have a contract created for the transaction. Included in your Deed of Sale should be the following:

  • Name, Address, and Contact Number of Seller and Buyer
  • Date of Purchase
  • Amount of Purchase
  • ID Number or Photocopy of ID (Optional)
  • Car Make/Year Model/Series
  • Car Registration Number
  • Plate Number
  • Engine Number
  • Chassis Number
  • Vehicle Registration Number
  • Car Mileage
  • Buyer and Seller Signature

During: Be honest

Communication is key in every deal, so make sure you communicate with your buyer the condition and history of your car. Sugarcoating problems will never benefit you positively and it will probably lead to more problems.

During: Arrange for a test drive

One of the best ways to close the deal is to ask buyers to do a test drive. You might have to go the extra mile to arrange it, but it is one of the surefire ways to sell your car. It will give buyers the intimate experience that can make or break their decision to buy. It will also give you the chance to highlight the car’s condition, safety features, and driving performance to them.

After: Turnover all documents

Okay, so you’ve closed the deal. Now what? It’s time to turn over all of the documents to the new owner.

If your car is still on a loan, you have to pay it off first before selling it. Otherwise, you can refinance it. You need to cancel or transfer your insurance policy as well. Besides the Original Certificate Of Registration (CR) and the Original Receipt Of Registration (OR), arrange for the transfer of the Certificate of Title. The process to do this will take a while, but you should do this to make sure that you are not any more liable for the car.
